Sublime: 25 years of the Wesfarmers Collection

Since the 19th century, in addition to depicting the sublime in nature, artists have explored the idea in the full range of human experience: in the realm of the psyche and the spirit and in the interconnections between people, nature and the wider cosmos.

This exhibition surveyed the diversity of holdings in the Wesfarmers Collection – taking a number of ideas commonly associated with the sublime and looking at ways in which artists have engaged with them over a period traversing two centuries of Australian art from 61 artists in the collection including:

John Peter Russell, Emanuel Phillips Fox, Arthur Boyd, Joy Hester, Ralph Balson, Ian Fairweather, John Brack, Tony Tuckson, Godfrey Miller, Russell Drysdale, Rover Thomas, Howard Arkley, Rosalie Gascoigne, Emily Kngwarreye, Bill Henson, Gordon Bennett, Mike Parr, Susan Norrie, Robert MacPherson, Judy Watson and Howard Taylor.
