SKYLAB: Out of Orbit

SKYLAB, the touring exhibition was inspired by the material relics from the Esperance Municipal Museum and local stories by members of the Esperance community who witnessed the fall of the NASA Skylab space station in 1979. The exhibition sought to explore relationships between art, astrophysics, Aboriginal oral traditions and local Esperance history.

Multi-media artist David Carson collaborated with USA based English atmospheric physicist and experimental electronic musician George Millward and UK video artist and 3D technical consultant, Brian McClave.

The interface of these creative skills resulted in the development of David Carson’s unique atmospheric installation,

SKYLAB, made up of paintings, stereoscopic video and digital images.

David Carson’s collaborative cross disciplinary approach challenged artificial divisions that exist between cultural workers, artists, historians, story tellers, artists and keepers of our cultural heritage.
