Pojagi and Beyond

Internationally renowned Korean fibre artist Chunghie Lee joined 16 prominent Australian artists in an exhibition of contemporary textiles which offered cross cultural interpretations of the Pojagi – the traditional Korean wrapping cloth.

Pojagi and Beyond was the exciting culmination of the processes and ideas explored by the artists following a cultural exchange with Chunghie Lee, in her 2002 masterclass for The Australian Forum for Textile Arts.

Imbued with meaning beyond its physical presence, the Pojagi is still made and used in Korea today to wrap precious gifts and cherished belongings.

The Australian artists re-interpreted this quintessential Korean object to create works which had personal cultural relevance, whilst demonstrating a broad range of textile processes and conceptual approaches.

The exhibition was first presented at the Fairfield City Museum and Gallery, NSW in December 2002 before travelling to the USA where it was exhibited at the Art Center Waco, in Texas.
