Oddfellows: the essence of contemporary Western Australian figurative artists

Oddfellows: the essence of contemporary Western Australian figurative artists was a major survey exhibition which featured the works of 13 young Western Australian artists. This was a group of contemporary painters in their early to mid thirties who all studied at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, in the early to mid 1980s. This group has developed certain figurative/realist styles which were distinctive to its members. The curator, Sandra Murray explored how and why this came about and its implications for theories of regionalism in art. The exhibition was a survey of the artists’ practice from the conclusion of art school studies to the late 1990's. Subjects included portraiture, self portraits, urban scenes, still life, mythology, narratives and beasts.
