Nyungar Landscapes Aboriginal Artists of the South-West: the Heritage of Carrolup, Western Australia

This was a major retrospective exhibition of two dimensional art from the bush landscape tradition of Western Australia's Aboriginal South-West and the former settlement of Carrolup (today named Marribank) near Katanning. It was the first public exhibition of this art since it was first popularised in Australia, and in Europe during the early 1950s. The work of 15 artists was represented by 58 watercolours, pastels and oils. The core of the exhibition was a group of about 30 works painted at Carrolup between 1948 and 1951 depicting the environment in a way that was personally significant. These were complemented by works produced by these same artists during the 1950s – 1970s and by paintings produced by several contemporary Aboriginal artists who had been strongly influenced by the 'Carrolup school’ of art.
