Mine Own Executioner: A Decade of Contemporary Self Portraiture in Western Australia
This exhibition showcased around 40 self portraits by contemporary Western Australian artists, selected from over a decade of Mine Own Executioner exhibitions at the Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC). Since 1995 emerging and mid-career artists were invited to participate alongside more established names in what developed into a popular and highly regarded tradition at MAC.
The selection of self portrait works in this show ranged widely in their use of media and approach to the theme. There were paintings, drawings, textile works, sculptures and mixed media works, together constituting an extremely diverse and fascinating collection. Approaches ranged from the figurative and representational to the more abstract, expressive and conceptual. This exhibition had a wide appeal, its central theme of self, personal experience and identity had relevance for a broad audience.
