Kimono as Canvas

Kimono as Canvas provided 13 outstanding contemporary fibre and textile artists the opportunity to explore the manipulation of material in the creation of works which are, as in the kimonos of old, a tour de force in technique, texture, decoration and design. The involvement of 5 Western Australian artists (Margaret Ainscow, Moira Doropoulos, AnneFarren, Wendy Lugg, Janie Matthews), 5 Eastern States (ACT: Keiko Amenomori Schmeisser NSW: Patricia Black, Vivien Haley, Barbara Rogers, Liz Williamson) and 3 Japanese artists (Keiko Kanesaki, Hiroyuki Shindo, Koji Takaki), together with the inclusion of 13 original Japanese prints from the Edo period (1600-1868) featuring the kimono, illustrated the cultural influences between Australia and Japan in the development of contemporary textile techniques and design.
