Intervention: Contemporary Art From the Pilbara

The artists and curator, all non-indigenous migrants to the Pilbara, acknowledged that their own presence, their recreational activities and the towns that they live in, are all interventions on this ancient landscape.

The artists explored a range of issues and ideas about interaction with a landscape that is rich in geological and human history.

Their expression addressed subtle forms of intervention such as collecting rocks and leisure pursuits such as fishing, camping and four-wheel driving. Others dealt with more dramatic examples related to significant land use in the iron ore, gas and salt industries.Intervention presented the works of seven contemporary artsits who lived in the Pilbara towns of Karratha and Dampier in Western Australia. Taking the uniqueness of the Pilbara landscape as a starting point, the artists in this exhibition explored ideas of interaction and intervention. The theme of intervention encompassed a range of issues and ideas.
