Guy Grey-Smith Landscapes of WA

Throughout a career spanning more than thirty years, Guy Grey-Smith (1916-1981) sought to express the power of nature in his art. Grey Smith's approach of simplifying the landscape to its most basic elements resulted in a fresh and often challenging interpretation of the Western Australian environment. Grey-Smith often interpreted a particular location in several mediums, starting with an ink drawing or watercolour painted in situ, simplifying the image in woodcuts and screen prints and then culminating in a large oil painting in which he used colour and texture to fully express the strength of the landscape. By including the drawings, prints and oil paintings of specific subject matter, the exhibition traced the development of the artist's style. This exhibiton brought together oil paintings, drawings and prints from public, private and corporate collections.
