From Within – Jane Whiteley Works in Cloth

From Within presented works from Fremantle based artist Jane Whiteley made over the years 1989-1999. During this time she had emerged as one of the leading practitioners in contemporary textiles in Western Australia, with her intense and meditative works that spoke of the humanity of cloth, its universal language and its' everyday associations with the body and memory. The exhibition gave the viewer an opportunity to follow Whiteley's creative journey with a number of different themes appearing and retreating at different stages and connecting at many points. The most dominant was the idea of mending cloth as a metaphor for healing the body, however she also pursued a more formal interest in deconstructing the grid and finding rhythm in the replacement and piecing of cloth.
