Ararat 4th Biennial Exhibition

41 works were selected to tour from an exhibition of 64 works. The full artist list is outlined to include all 64 artists. This exhibition presented contemporary Australian Fibre and Textiles including 3-D sculptural forms. Many works utilised fine art techniques of painting, drawing, and collage to achieve rich surface decoration. Of Ararat Gallery's Biennial exhibitions this is the first for which there are virtually no limitations of scale; a recognition of a pluralism which exists within the fibre arts in Australia.

This diversity of practice was acknowledged in 1985, by the Gallery's Director, David Salter, when the previous maximum dimensions of the miniature theme were increased to attract a greater range of works, both in size and content.

The 1987 exhibition focused on three theme group: three dimensional sculptural forms, two dimensional surface manipulation, and tapestry and traditional woven structure.
